What custom software costs in Switzerland (2026): ranges, drivers and how to read a quote

What Swiss development effort costs, the five drivers that move a quote, the costs outside the build price, and the questions that expose hidden costs.

Every week someone asks a software agency “roughly, what would this cost?” and gets an answer that is either useless (“it depends”) or a number with no basis. This guide gives you the bases: realistic ranges for the kinds of business software mid-sized companies commission in Switzerland, the five drivers that move a quote, and the questions that make hidden costs visible before you sign.

The figures are our own planning ranges for the project sizes we are set up for, plus published Swiss market data where it exists. They are planning aids, not quotes.

What Swiss software development costs per unit of effort

Swiss agencies publish day or hour rates more readily than project prices. Public sources put agency hourly rates for development at roughly CHF 100–200 and senior day rates at roughly CHF 1,500–2,200 (see sources at the end). Freelance rates cluster around CHF 100–180 per hour, higher in Zurich, Basel and Geneva.

Two consequences follow:

  1. A senior engineer-month in Switzerland costs roughly CHF 25,000–40,000 at agency rates. A three-month project staffed by two people is CHF 150,000–240,000 before anyone has written a line of code you can see. That is why Swiss-only agencies quote the way they do.
  2. Quotes for the same brief vary by a factor of three. The same source that reports the rate band reports this variance. The reason is rarely greed; it is that briefs leave room for interpretation, and every agency fills the gaps with its own assumptions.

Our model puts implementation capacity in India under senior review from Basel, which lowers the cost base without removing the senior judgement. It does not make software cheap: the architecture, integration and acceptance work still have to be done by experienced people.

Where the project ranges live

We publish indicative CHF ranges per project type — integrations from CHF 25,000, internal tools from CHF 30,000, portals from CHF 60,000, modernisations from CHF 80,000 — on the pricing page, together with the engagement models (free written assessment, fixed-fee discovery sprint, fixed-price build, retained team) and the commercial terms. This guide does not repeat that table; it explains what moves a project within those ranges and how to compare quotes.

Smaller projects exist: a single well-defined integration or a pilot for one internal tool can start around CHF 10,000–15,000. Below that, senior involvement does not pay off for the buyer, and we say so.

The five drivers that move a quote

1. Integrations — count and quality. A modern REST API with documentation costs a fraction of a SOAP interface with undocumented behaviour, a database nobody is allowed to touch directly, or a file exchange with an old system. Ask every vendor how many interfaces they counted and what they assumed about each.

2. Roles and permissions. One internal role with full access is simple. Five external roles with partner-specific data visibility, an approval chain and an audit trail are a different system. Write the roles down before you ask for prices.

3. The number and completeness of user journeys. We price by journeys (“submit a claim with attachments and approval”, “view and download invoices”), not screens. Ten complete journeys are more valuable — and more predictable — than thirty half-specified ones.

4. Data migration. Moving data from an old system and proving it arrived correctly is its own workstream, with rehearsals and reconciliation reports. Vendors who do not itemise it have either forgotten it or will charge for it later.

5. Your availability. Projects move at the speed of decisions. A product owner who can answer questions within a day shortens the project; one who can only meet fortnightly lengthens it — and time is money on both sides.

Costs that are not in the build price

  • Cloud and hosting: for a typical portal or tool, CHF 100–1,000 per month depending on environments, backups and traffic. Swiss-region hosting costs a little more than EU-region.
  • Licences: identity providers, e-mail delivery, monitoring, map or payment services. Usually small, occasionally significant (per-user pricing).
  • Penetration test before an external go-live: a third-party test is typically a four-figure to low five-figure CHF item.
  • Support and evolution: plan 10–20 % of the build cost per year for a system that keeps pace with the business, or a monthly retainer.
  • Your own time: workshops, acceptance testing, training. Often the most under-budgeted line.

How to read a quote

Ask for these five things in writing, from every vendor:

  1. The list of user journeys or features included — and explicitly excluded.
  2. The list of integrations, with the assumption made about each (API available? documented? test system?).
  3. Who does the work, where, and who reviews it.
  4. What happens when scope changes: how change requests are priced and approved.
  5. What is handed over: code, accounts, documentation, tests, and whether you could take it to another vendor.

If two quotes differ by more than 50 %, the difference is almost always in points 1 and 2. Resolve those before comparing numbers.

Fixed price or time and material?

For defined scope, fixed price protects you from overruns and forces the vendor to do the thinking up front — but only if the scope is defined well enough, which is what a paid discovery sprint is for. Time and material fits evolving products and ongoing teams. In our experience most mid-sized projects work best as a hybrid: a fixed-fee discovery, a fixed-price build in milestones, then a monthly retainer for evolution.

Sources and caveats

Swiss agency and freelance rate bands: edana.ch (2025), tytos.ch, magicheidi.ch and pfeffersack.ch rate overviews; Swiss developer salary data from swissdevjobs.ch and glassdoor.com (accessed August 2026). Project ranges are Monolith’s own planning ranges for 2026 and will differ from other agencies’. None of this is an offer; your project will be priced in writing after a discovery sprint.
